This is not a pilgrimage but a bucket list to leave no regrets behind.

In 2016 Virginia will embark on the most challenging journey of her life. A cross-country walk from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego, California.

Virginia's hope is to freshen up her life by seeing this beautiful country from a new perspective. Who knows what amazing happenings will occur on this incredible journey. According to Virginia, “The intended outcome is the transformation of social expectations for the average 65 year old woman. Can she be brave? Possible, probable that people at any age will discover that scares them…and do it.”

Having been drawn to walking since she was a child, Virginia used the ritual to escape and feel grounded during the good times and the bad. Through walking, Virginia realized that she could walk anywhere she wanted, and she could do it alone or with others. To her, the freedom was unbeatable.

ABOUT VIRGINIA

While unsure what she will take away from this journey, she does have some thoughts as to what the experience will look, smell, and feel like: “I’m drawing a line in the sand, with what my life looks like now versus what my life would look like after 2500 miles. Who will I meet? Where will I land? What experiences, what ideas, will I have? I’m opening a fresh, brand new book. I’m on a totally prescribed adventure. I’m a wanderer.”

In a sense, this experience is showcasing her expression in the world about what is important to her: her health, her physical ability, her commitment to what she says she is going to do, her sense of adventure, and her willingness to meet new people in new places. And above all – she values leaving things open ended. “If I knew what the ending looked like, why would I do the stuff in the middle? It’s a journey; it’s a process.”

This journey will be made up of 145 sections of walking and is estimated to last from the beginning of April to the end of November, 2016. The exact dates of the walk will ultimately depend on the walking pace that Virginia takes on this immense journey. All are welcome to join her on this adventure for any part of the walk at any point along the route.
